INDD is the native document format of Adobe InDesign, the page layout software used for magazines, books, brochures, reports and packaging.
An INDD file stores the page layout, text, styles, master pages and frames, but placed images and graphics are usually linked rather than embedded, and fonts are referenced, not included. That is why InDesign projects are normally exchanged as a packaged folder. INDD files cannot be opened by older InDesign versions without saving to IDML.
| Extension | .indd |
|---|---|
| Full name | Adobe InDesign Document |
| Type | Design files |
| Typical size | 1–100 MB (plus linked images) |
How to open a .indd file
| Device | How to open it |
|---|---|
| Windows | Only Adobe InDesign opens INDD fully; Affinity Publisher can import IDML exports, not INDD. |
| Mac | Adobe InDesign is required; Quick Look may show only a thumbnail. |
| iPhone / iPad | No app opens INDD; ask for a PDF export instead. |
| Android | No app opens INDD; ask for a PDF export instead. |
| Linux | No native support; Scribus cannot open INDD, so a PDF or IDML export is needed. |
Converting .indd files
INDD is exported to PDF for print or review and to EPUB for ebooks from within InDesign; saving as IDML lets older InDesign versions and Affinity Publisher open the layout. There is no reliable free converter that reads INDD directly.
How to send a .indd file
- Open sendryo.com on the device that has the file and add it.
- Tap Get share code.
- On the other device, enter the code — the .indd file arrives directly, unchanged, at full quality.
Tips for sharing .indd files
- Use File > Package in InDesign so links, fonts and an IDML copy are collected in one folder, then ZIP it before sending.
- Check font licensing before including fonts in a package for another person or company.
- Send a PDF proof alongside the package so reviewers without InDesign can check the layout.
Frequently asked questions
How can I open an INDD file without InDesign?
There is no reliable free app that opens INDD files directly. Ask the sender for a PDF to view it, or for an IDML file, which Affinity Publisher and other InDesign versions can open. A free InDesign trial from Adobe is another option.
Why are images missing in my InDesign file?
InDesign links to images instead of embedding them. If you receive only the INDD file, the links point to locations on the sender's computer. Ask for a packaged folder, created with File > Package, which includes a Links folder with all placed images.
What is IDML?
IDML is the InDesign Markup Language format, an XML-based version of a document. It lets newer InDesign files open in older InDesign versions and in some third-party apps like Affinity Publisher. It is included automatically when you package a document.
How do I send a large .indd file?
Open Sendryo on both devices, add the .indd file and share the 6-digit code. It goes directly to the other device at original quality, with no size limit set by us and no upload to a server.
