About psd files
PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native document format. It keeps layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, text layers, channels and layer styles, so the file stays fully editable. A PSD is limited to 2 GB and 30,000 pixels on a side; beyond that Photoshop saves as PSB (Large Document Format), which is common for big composites and print banners.
Designers send PSDs to clients, other designers, retouchers, printers and developers who need to slice out assets. Templates, mockups and social media kits are also distributed as PSDs.
| Typical size | 50 MB – 2 GB (PSB can be larger) |
|---|---|
| File extensions | .psd, .psb |
Why sending psd files is often a pain
Layered PSDs are big, often hundreds of megabytes, which rules out email. Chat apps either refuse them or treat them as unknown documents with size caps. Linked smart objects and fonts live outside the file, so the recipient can open the PSD and find missing links or substituted typefaces even when the main file arrived intact.
How to send psd files with Sendryo
- Open Sendryo on the device that has the psd files. Use any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox or Samsung Internet. Nothing to install.
- Add your psd files. Drag and drop, tap to choose, or pick a whole folder. Add as many files as you like.
- Share the 6-digit code. Tap “Get share code”, then share the code, link or QR code with the receiver.
- The receiver enters the code. Files stream directly to their device, encrypted and at original quality. They save each file or download everything as a ZIP.
Ways to send psd files compared
| Method | Size | Quality | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email attachment | ~20–25 MB | Original | Small files to anyone, anytime |
| Messaging apps | Limited (WhatsApp documents up to 2 GB at the time of writing) | Media often compressed unless sent as a document | Quick sharing with contacts |
| Cloud storage link | Depends on plan | Original | Recipients who download later |
| Sendryo | No limit set by us | Original | Fast, private, live transfers to any device |
Tips for sending psd files
- Use File > Package or collect linked smart objects into the same folder and send the folder, so links don't break.
- List the fonts you used, or include licensed font files only if your license permits sharing; otherwise text layers get substituted.
- Keep 'Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility' on when saving so apps without full Photoshop support can show a flattened preview.
- Send a flattened JPG or PNG preview alongside the PSD so non-designers can check the work without opening Photoshop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I send a large PSD file to a client?
Open sendryo.com, add the PSD (and any linked assets folder) and share the code or link with your client. When they open it, the file streams directly from your computer to theirs with all layers intact. Both of you need the page open; if the client can only download later, use a cloud link instead.
Will layers and smart objects be kept?
Yes. Sendryo transfers the file byte for byte, so every layer, mask, embedded smart object and adjustment stays as you saved it. Linked smart objects are separate files, though, so send those too. Fonts are not embedded in PSDs, which is why the recipient may see font warnings.
What's the difference between PSD and PSB?
PSB is Photoshop's Large Document Format. A PSD can't exceed 2 GB or 30,000 pixels on a side, while PSB supports much larger dimensions and file sizes. Both keep layers. PSB files open only in Photoshop and a few compatible apps, so check the recipient's software first.
Is there a size limit for sending psd files?
No limit is set by Sendryo. Because the files go straight to the other device, the only limit is the receiver’s free storage. Very large transfers work best on a computer.
